About me

About

Welcome to the portfolio of Daan F. F. Hittema.

Here you can find a representation of my selected work.

I am an industrial product designer and engineer from The Netherlands.

With a multidisciplinary approach I develop products and services that matter! I am passionate about delivering meaningful innovative solutions. The goal is to create well-designed products that fit the needs and meet the expectations of clients and users. My ambition is to develop the best product that push boundaries, is feasible and always with the bigger picture in mind.

I like to work at the fuzzy front-end of innovation while being involved in different process phases. The interaction between stakeholders and integrating all various aspects of engineering, design, and business energizes me. It offers me a new innovative and entrepreneurial perspective for a strategic approach in projects.

I graduated from my bachelor Industrial Product Design at The Hague University of applied sciences in 2018.

At Pezy Group in Amsterdam, I had my first experiences as an industrial product designer. The internship in 2016 offered me great opportunities and gave me a lot of new insights. Working with an international team and developing various products for a wide range of companies have made me realize what kind of product developer I am.

Collaborating on a local or international scale is what makes product development possible and challenging. Studying abroad at UC Berkeley has given me the experience to work globally. During my six months in the United States of America, I`ve learned about entrepreneurship, innovation, product management, the Silicon Valley culture and creating start-ups.

I did my graduation project at ATAG Benelux. During this internship I developed a range hood balance system targeted on kitchens in well-insulated buildings. Collaborating with various stakeholders like TNO has resulted in a well thought out product that suit the market.

After my study I got the opportunity to come back at Pezy Group. As a New Business Developer I support the company in identifying and realizing new opportunities.

My Skills

01 Analog Sketching

Creating explanatory drawings to communicate function, usage and appearance are an important factor in a lot of the participated projects. Drawing in perspective or views, telling a story by a storyboard or communicating proportions and material by lines and colors help a lot to create a clear image for everyone involved and is considerSSed a great value.
Daan prefers to make the beginning sketches with a light blue pencil, outlines the desired contour with fine-liner and highlight important features with Copic-markers.

“Daan is passionate, meticulous, motivated, open and puts a lot of time and effort in visualization to get the best possible result. He is strong in analog and digital sketching.”

Martijn van de Wiel –
Lecturer product visualization & founder of Sketchdrive and Designsketching

02 Digital Sketching

When presenting ideas, concepts and proposals for products and services, a communicative high-quality visual is needed. Final drawings or visuals are often made by digital sketching tools, because it looks more professional and is more clearly than an analog sketch or drawing.

Even with digital sketching, the process starts with a manual drawing as a reference. After scanning the manual drawing into a digital sheet a lot of variations can be explored. When the desired shapes, functions, proportions are drawn, the rendering starts. Adding color, texture, highlights, shadows and logos finalize the digital visual.

- Sketchbook Pro

- Photoshop

- Wacom Tablet

- Wacom Cintiq

03 CAD Modeling

3D Software

At several projects the usage of CAD programs were required. Working with the Solidworks software has grown accustomed. The same applies for working with a dedicated mouse (3Dconnection) for 3D. Making geometric and organic shapes have become a useful skill. Creating products with such software enables to calculate and simulated potential processes(Injection molding) and forces(on snap fits). Besides shaping 3D products in the computer, 2D technical drawings(American projection view) can be made. Making the designs more attractive for presentational use, renders can be made in Solidworks or KeyShot.

04 Model Making

Making models and mock ups early on in the process helps discovering new insights and helps understanding its function or proportion. Technical and visual models eventually lead to prototypes, or even the first series product.

During almost every project, at some point, a model is made. Contributing to the modelmaking phase. He isn’t afraid to work in the workshop. Growing up and working in the family business, contracting & carpentry company, has taught him the technical insight and skills to create models. He worked with several techniques to make models. During his internship (2016) at Pezy Group he calibrated and repaired the Leapfrog FDM printer.

There are multiple way of creating models. Making quick and dirty mock-ups from cardboard and paper or more tangible demos from wood or metal can be really useful. Nowadays we can also work very precisely with rapid prototyping techniques like 3D printing, CNC drilling or laser cutting/engraving. With these new techniques it is easier to work with different materials like plastics and fabrics.

This picture frame has been designed and created with 3D printed white PLA using FDM technique. This product was made as a gift for a family member who just received a baby.

On the back you can insert the glass, picture and wooden support.

On the roof of the monumental building “De Prinsemarij” located in Laren, The Netherlands, a modern roof deck was created. Using composite planks made out of wood and recycled plastics, the flooring, stairs and planters for ivy plants was created.
The usage of two colors, creates depth and a dynamic feeling. At this time he assisted the project of the family business J. Hittema aannemers & zn.

05 Tutoring

During every project at the Hague University of Applies Sciences, Daan was the leader of the project-group. While still working collective on the project and collaborate with one another, making important decision and choosing a well-considered direction. Open for suggestions and the willingness to discuss openly about key-decision with everyone. The characteristics of organizing, helping and achieving objectives in a structured way expends outside product development projects.`

He has created an educational class for a high school, the Comenius College in Hilversum. He helped develop the new program called “Comenius in Science”. The goal was to improve communicative skills regarding product development projects. Especially how to be clear to other people, in this case the students. Together with Said el Haidouri and Rolf Nijman, the design process was taught briefly In front of students. Daan also made the module book for the design assessment “Build your sustainable house of the future”. The lessons contained clear steps, additional information, planning, deliverables and the required assessments for the students. Didactic and communicative skills of passing knowledge through and organizing projects has been improved during his time giving lectures, guiding the small design projects and creating a class (modulebook).

“I know Daan as a serious, passionate student. He has almost independently developed an educational program for engineering/design in high school (HAVO, 4th year). This shows his talent for purposeful work, his ability to pass the information and knowledge he has through to the students, and his talent to bond/connect people. Daan can make people excitement about (his) assignments/ideas and persuade them to cooperate, a great gift!”

Ing. S.J. Schipper – lecturer Industrial Product Design

For over 5 years Daan has taught and assisted Judo lessons at the club where he also exercises, like real team player and sportsman. Communicative skills have improved by teaching, guiding and helping various people, from small children, teenagers, peers, adults and elderly in a didactic way. Certainly in a sport like Judo, respect, discipline and control are key values, which are useful in every situation.

“Daan Hittema has given an outstanding presentation to our students about the “industrial product design” program, with a lot of enthusiasm. The students enjoyed the presentation and listened captivated to the story.”

Rolf Nijman – Dean of the Comenius College (High school)
